Day 55 (13.8 miles)

Posted in : LEJOG on by : Nick

Rowardennan to Inverarnan

At this stage of the game you’d expect any day where the mileage doesn’t start with a 2 to be relatively easy. Today was probably the exception largely due to the conditions underfoot.

I left the youth hostel at about 9am, I’d managed to dry my clothes from yesterday and was optimistic about the likelihood of a dry day. The path for the first few miles was a forest track so relatively easy, I even managed to overtake a few fellow WHWers.

After 7 miles, ideally placed for lunch, is Inversnaid and the Inversnaid Hotel. I ordered a Ham & Cheese sandwich but had to wait until noon to get a beer.

After lunch the real challenge began, the WHW guidebook says “a reputation for being one of the hardest sections of the Way”, the path is really tough, it reminded me of sections on the Cornish Coast path. But, as a reward the scenery and views across the loch were amazing. Sharp showers passed through which meant constant stops to put on & take off waterproofs.

In contrast to yesterday I was spoilt for choice for photo of the day, the last few miles walking by the loch has spectacular views south.

I arrived at the campsite, pitched my tent, had a shower and still had time for a couple of beers before dinner.

Some stats:
Mileage count: 972.3
Pint count: 203
economy: 38.3mpg
Malt Whisky count: 13

well mate looks like you have taken the worst that bonny Scotland can throw at you and come through it with flying colours. You have been very fortunate with the weather so far (could have rained every day) mileage getting close to the 1000 mark great achievement on its own, with you all the way.
