Today I wanted to position myself so I had an easy hike into Quincy tomorrow. I wanted to go a bit further but because there’s so much burn area there’s not many safe places to camp.
I set off with an uphill start at 7am, but the day would be mostly downhill. After the initial climb I went down into a thickly wooded valley, very green with lots of water running through it. It was cool & pleasant to walk along before the sun got over the ridge.
After climbing out of the valley the trees started to thin out and eventually after about 14miles I entered to burn area. So that meant very sandy trail with no shade & overgrown undergrowth right next to the trail. Not my favourite environment as dead trees often means blowdowns and this was no exception.
I filled up with water a couple of times, but as I was on a ridge, this often meant a side trail down to the springs. With 6miles to go the overgrown trail was really bad, to a point where I was fighting to get between the very gnarly bushes.
The river I’m camping beside tonight is at 3,000ft. In the morning I have to climb to 6,000ft to get to the road I need to hitch to town from. Dinner; cold mash & tuna
