Once I’d completed the uphill bit I started yesterday afternoon. Today’s hike was mainly through the burn area created by the 2021 Dixie fire. (Worth googling. Total burn area: 1,505 square miles)
I set my alarm to get up and hike at first light (6:20) but it turned out to be nearer sunrise at 6:40 when I set off. The climb soon warmed me up as it was noticeable colder than previous days. Towards the top of the climb there’s a signpost to say you’ve left the ‘Sierra range’ of mountains and are now entering the ‘Cascade range’.
Once over the ridge I briefly had cell service and managed to post my blog. Then a small descent into the black soot of the burn area. (This burn zone has very few blowdowns over the trail as ‘trail crews’ work hard to clear the way in the section. Thanks trail crews)
So the next 19miles were mostly burn area with a few patches of live trees from time to time. Water is also a problem through this area as most sources are half a mile or so ‘off trail’.
Towards the end of the day I was specifically looking for a tentsite with no dead trees around it because if one falls over in the night on to your tent it could smart a little. It’s pretty cold tonight so much so I’m gonna sleep in my down jacket. Dinner: cold mash & tuna
